Scottsdale, Arizona is situated in the Sonoran Desert at foot of the McDowell Mountains. It borders the Tonto National Forest to the North, Phoenix to its West, and the McDowell Mountains, East, to the South.

Scottsdale, which includes the area now known as Scottsdale, was first inhabited in 300 BC by the Hohokam. They occupied it from around 1450 AD to 1450 AD. The complex network of irrigation canals built by this ancient civilization was unparalleled in pre-Columbian North America. The canals were over 400 km long at their peak. Some of them have been restored and are still in use today. The Hohokam probably left the area around 1450 or 1500 due to prolonged drought, although the exact reasons are still unknown. The Hohokam's direct descendents are the Akimel O'odham, (Pima), and the Tohono O'odham(Papago).

The city is located in the Salt River Valley or the "Valley of the Sun" in the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert. Scottsdale is 31 miles (50 km) in length and 11.4 miles (18.3km) wide at its largest point. It shares borders with many municipalities and entities. Tempe is located to the south of Scottsdale. Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community occupies the southern boundary. It extends along the eastern border, which also borders Fountain Hills and McDowell Mountain Regional park. At 4,890 feet, Butte Peak is the highest point.
