Glendale, AZ

Glendale, pronounced /'glendeIl/, is a Maricopa County city, in Arizona, United States. It is located about 9 miles (14km) northwest of Downtown Phoenix. It had 248,325 people as of the 2020 census.

Although it was once considered "old-fashioned", the community has made great efforts to modernize the area and make it an entertainment hub for neighboring Phoenix suburbs. Glendale is now a popular suburb in Phoenix. Although you may have been to Glendale, AZ, before, it's a completely different experience living there. Here are some facts about Glendale that will help you decide if it is the right place for you and those you love.

Burgess Hadsell and Murphy worked together in 1891 to bring 70 River Brethren families and Brethren families to Glendale, to establish a temperance colony. The town's prohibition on alcohol attracted many settlers to the area. Murphy platted the site for the town and added some business lots to the plat. It was bordered by Lamar Road on its south, 55th Avenue to the east, Myrtle Avenue to the north and 59th Avenue to the west. With the exchange of Murphy's right-of-way along Grand Avenue, a railroad was built from Prescott to Phoenix. Glendale settlers were able to move goods to the north and receive materials easily via the railroad.

The United States Census Bureau estimates that the city covers 65.1 square miles (169km2) and that 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) of this total area, which is 0.63%, is water. The city's western extremities are bounded by the New River and Agua Fria Rivers.

Two major sports venues are located in Glendale: State Farm Stadium, and Gila River Arena. These venues are part the Glendale Sports and Entertainment District development plan. It is intended to encourage growth in the Yucca district, which is sparsely populated. The City of Glendale owns both venues.

Since 2006, State Farm Stadium has been home to the Arizona Cardinals in National Football League. It also hosts the annual Fiesta Bowl college game. The Cardinals and the bowl game were moved from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe to Arizona State University. The facility has hosted two Super Bowls and three college football national championships games. It also hosts Wrestlemania XXVI, Wrestlemania XXVI, and International Champions Cup soccer. The stadium, designed by Peter Eisenman, was featured in Modern Marvels, a History Channel TV series. This is because of the roll-out of natural grass.

Glendale has a number higher education institutions. Glendale Community College North and Glendale Community College North are part of the Maricopa County Community College District. They can be found just across the border in northwestern Phoenix. After World War II, Arizona State University's Thunderbird School of Global Management was established in Glendale at Thunderbird Field. It recently moved its campus to downtown ASU. The university joined it as an independent unit dedicated exclusively to international business education. The West campus is located just across the border in Glendale, west Phoenix. Midwestern University, a college of medicine for graduate students, is located in Glendale.

Living in Glendale has another benefit: mild winters and pleasant summers. This is the right place for you if extreme temperatures are not your thing. There is no snow forecast and the annual precipitation averages nine inches. This is what makes it a desert. July is the hottest month of the year with temperatures reaching 100 degrees.
